Leeds Rhinos proved to be late bloomers in their 20-12 victory over Hull KR in the opening clash of Super League XIII.

The Rhinos put first points on the scoreboard through a Scott Donald try in the left corner before letting Hull KR in when former Melbourne Storm centre/winger Jake Webster stretched out his hand to plant the ball down.

The talented Kiwi then followed up his first try ever in Super League with a penalty goal before racing in again from 50 metres out to hand the Rovers a 12-4 lead in the second half.

Losing none of their patience and never say die attitude under new coach Brian McLennan despite being down 12-8 with 15 minutes remaining, the reigning Super League champions hit back through two Lee Smith tries care of the passing and kicking game of Danny McGuire.

McGuire eventually crossed over at the death to help Leeds start the new season sitting on top of the Super League competition ladder.

The only serious visible injury as this goes to press was the facial injury which forced Shaun Brisco (Hull KR) to leave the field on the 51st minute.

Leeds: 20 (Donald, Smith (2), McGuire tries; Sinfield (2) goals) d Hull KR 12 (Jake Webster (2) tries; Jake Webster, Murrell goals) at Headingley Stadium. Half-Time: Hull 6-4. Referee: R Silverwood (Dewsbury) Crowd: 18,467

Meanwhile in round 1 of the Challenge Cup the Milford Marlins became the first team to be held scoreless in the competition this year after getting thrashed 38-0 at the hands of Millom.
