globalrugbyleague - Mon, 12 Feb 2007 20:44:00 GMTSuper League XII kicked back into full swing this weekend, bringing with it snow, some shock results, and a world record attendance at a Super League fixture.
Wigan New Zealand Warriors">New Zealand Warriors were beaten 16-10 at home to Warrington Wolves in front of a Super League record crowd of 21,693. Tries from Barnett and Anderson sealed victory for Warrington in the driving snow at the JJB. The night was marred slightly for the Wolves, when debutant Adrian Morley misjudged a tackle and suffered a suspected fractured eye socket.
Another shock result was in the game between St. Helens and Harlequins, with last years treble winners succumbing to a 6-14 home defeat to the Quins. Tries from debutant Danny Orr, Jon Wells and Lee Hopkins gave Harlequins the perfect start to their league campaign. At the end of round 1 they sit on top of the ESL ladder. Can they stay there?
Newly promoted Hull Kingston Rovers beat Wakefield 14-9 with a last minute try from Ben Cockayne. Scott Murrel scored Hull KR’s first try in Super League, but the visitors looked to have sealed the points when Jamie Rooney hit a superb drop goal in the 73rd minute. At the death Cockayne, who was sin-binned in the first half, cut through the Wildcats defence to seal victory for the Robins.
Bradford edged out Huddersfield with a last gasp Glenn Morrison try to give the Bulls an 18-14 victory. After narrowly losing out to St. Helens last week, the Giants took the game to Steve McNamara’s side and led 14-12 with 10 minutes remaining after a converted Stuart Jones try. Shortly after, Morrison crashed over the whitewash to give the Bulls a winning start.
Leeds Rhinos got off to a 30-26 winning start at The Willows after surviving Salford’s late surge. Debutant full back Brent Webb stole the show with two tries, helping Leeds to a 22-6 lead at the break. The Reds replied with five tries after the break but a converted Gordon Tansey try meant Leeds held on.
Catalans St. George Illawarra Dragons">St. George Illawarra Dragons put in a resolute defensive display to hold Hull FC to a 10-10 draw at the KC Stadium. Both teams were missing key halfbacks Stacey Jones and Paul Cooke which resulted in a tight game. Adam Mogg and Vincent Duport touched down to give the St. George Illawarra Dragons">St. George Illawarra Dragons a 10-2 lead. Queenslander Matt Sing though scored to put Hull back into the contest on debut. Back rower Danny Tickle then added a penalty to level and had the chance to win the game in the closing stages, only to see his penalty attempt sail wide.
The opening full round of Super League XII fixtures has proved that the competition has become fiercer each year. Unexpected away wins for Warrington and Harlequins on Friday night, a first Super League victory for Hull KR on Saturday, and a well earned away point for Les Catalans on Sunday highlight the unpredictability of the league, once again proving the pundits wrong. Roll on week two!
