globalrugbyleague - Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:46:00 GMTThe West Australian Reds broke another new record in round 4 of the Jim Beam Cup; they snatched their first win at home with a 38-26 victory over Southern Sydney.
Before a crowd of up to 2000 fans at Member Equity Stadium – dubbed the WAR Zone from the acronym of the WA Reds - the Perth foot soldiers now hold 2 wins from their first four games.
Leading 10-8 at half-time, the Perth outfit then appeared to fall sleep when they let in four tries via some ordinary defense early in the second half.
Finding themselves down by 16-points (26-10), the Reds soon revived their attacking engine and returned to form care of forward Sio Mailangi who came off the bench in his first game and immediately intimidated with some power runs through the middle, which shook up the visitors.
The Reds then lifted when Taurean Sheehan, made the most of the ball bouncing off the upright and raced over the line.
That try seemed to open a point scoring floodgate through a quick succession of tries coming via Isaac Thomas, Ben Lindergaard and James Blake in an amazing 12 minute period which allowed the locals to regain the lead at 32-26.
The final try came through Steve Gherardi on the siren with the second of two tries for the night. It was converted by Mick Kestel who finished with 14 points for the game including his own try to open the game in the first 2 minutes.
Coach Chris Dever was pleased with the win, but again disappointed with the lapse during the middle part of the game that seems to be happening week after week.
“The guys started well and ran in a couple of good tries but then failed to consolidate by playing solid sets of tackles to maintain the lead and control the game.
We must learn to protect the ball and hold onto our leads. It was good to win the way we did though, especially in front of our first home crowd.”
Best players for the Reds included James Blake and Ben Lindegaard with good leading roles from Shane McMenemy and Isaac Thomas.
