globalrugbyleague - Tue, 15 Apr 2008 12:49:00 GMTNorth Sydney remain the only undefeated team in the 2008 NSWRL State Cup after snatching a very late 24-20 victory over Wentworthville in round 5.
Billed by many as a Grand Final grudge match, the showdown between last year’s runners-up and the eventual premiers didn’t disappoint with the game going right down to the wire.
With the visitors down 18-12 at the break, a scrappy second-half full of excellent handling errors looked like ensuring the remainder of the contest would eventuate into a no-scoring affair for either side.
That was until the Magpies slotted what appeared to be a make and break penalty goal inside the final quarter to edge ahead 20-18.
That was before Bears halfback Charlie Herekotukutuku grubber kicked into the right corner to set up a match-winning try for Nathanael Barnes with 3 seconds remaining.
Over at Henson Park the Newtown Jets drew 10-all with Manly-Warringah, ensuring the Jets avoided putting together a losing sequence after a terrific start to season 08.
The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles">Manly Warringah Sea Eagles had led 4-0 at halftime and 10-4 with fifteen minutes to play and despite two attempts just failed to land the killer blow of a field goal.
With just five minutes remaining the Jets pulled back to 10-8 and halfback Ben Green's curving sideline conversion levelled the scores.
Cronulla-Cobras coach Craig Wilson can now breathe a sigh of relief after his team scored win number one with an emphatic 22-16 triumph at home over the hot and cold Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs">Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Windsor picked up their first loss on the road this season after Central Newcastle after going down 40-30 at Energy Australia Stadium.
The Auckland Vulcans are yet to score back to back wins after overturning last week’s impressive 1-point victory over then undefeated Newtown into a 12-point defeat at the hands of Balmain-Ryde.
Wests Magpies are back to doing what no team enjoys doing best. They are sitting at the bottom of the State Cup table after getting thrashed by 26-points care of the Central Coast.
