Hull KR found a way to make up for last week's loss to the 2007 Super League champions. They beat last year's Grand Final runners up, St Helens 24-22.

And once again former NRL star Jake Webster continued to play a heavyweight role in contributing to the success of the Rovers.

Leading 22-6 shortly after the break, the Rovers then had to play a game of 'survivor' as St Helens realising they were in do-or-die mode, hit back with in the 53rd minute of play care of a missed tackle on former Sydney Rooster Chris Flannery, allowing Steve Tyrer to score.

A Paul Wellens offload then gave Saints fans some hope of a comeback when Paul Clough took advantage of it and crossed the line shortly before Tyrer went in on the 67th minute to lock the scores after a successful conversion.

But it wouldn't be a thrilling game without some drama and that's exactly what the 8.713 at Craven Park got when Jake Webster successfully booted a penalty goal in the 72 minute.

When Tyrer attempted the same tactic he missed.

Play then went on after the full-time siren with centre Matt Gidley crossing the line in what looked like an ultimate act of sporting injustice for Rovers fans who had patiently been waiting for the breakthrough win.

However Gidley's effort was ruled 'no try' after Lee Gilmour made a pass once the tackle had been completed.

Needless to say Saints coach Daniel Anderson was not amused at kicking the season off with a loss like that.

" They are all wired up and the touch judge could have told the ref earlier and stopped the whole rigmarole," Anderson told the BBC in regards to the late disallowed try.

""Rovers were awesome in the first half. I don't think they made an error, they had plenty of possession and they punished us and I thought we fought back well."

The Rovers dominated the first half after Jake Webster opened the scoring after only seven minutes. Daniel Fitzhenry then took a Murrell high kick to touch down before Chev Walker used a flashy one-handed off-load to send in Clint Newton.

Anderson then brought in Stuart Cunningham who had an immediate impact by diving in the corner to score left of the posts.
