Salford coach Shaun McRae is one step closer to coaching in the National League One following the Reds 52-14 loss to Leeds in round 23 of the English Super League.

McRae – who left NRL club South Sydney after being replaced by Jason Taylor last season - took over from sacked predecessor Karl Harrison in June yet the results have been far from encouraging in recent weeks.

Three-points behind Hull-KR at the bottom of the ESL table, the Reds will need to win most of their last four games to avoid relegation.

However there is obviously an air of confidence that the Reds can play their way out of their current predicament following news that Australian prop forward Craig Stapleton is joining the club in 2008 on a two-year contract.

Salford’s first half woes continued last Friday, falling behind 28-4 at half-time care of tries to Ryan Hall, Jamie Thackray, Kylie Leuluai, Keith Senior and Danny McGuire.

The visitors to their credit didn’t roll over and give up with Luke Dorn claiming Salford's second try in the left corner six minutes inside the second forty.

But 4 extra tries from Scott Donald, Thackray, McGuire and Ali Lauitiiti simply confirmed that the result of the game was never in doubt.

The Wigan New Zealand Warriors">New Zealand Warriors kept their finals hopes on life-support with a 20-12 win over hot and cold Huddersfield to end a three-week losing streak.

Pat Richards kicked 6 goals to surpass 100 points for the season.

St Helens received the rudest shock of the round, going down 21-0 against Les Catalans in a four tries to nil mis-match in Perpignan.

A repeat performance from the St. George Illawarra Dragons">St. George Illawarra Dragons in the upcoming Challenge Cup final would hand coach Mick Potter his first trophy since taking over as head coach.

Wakefield winger Peter Fox was probably one of the unluckiest stars of the round after being denied two tries due to forward passes in his side’s 28-14 win over the Harlequins.

Hull FC kept a top four spot alive with a solid 46-14 win over Warrington at KC Stadium in what is fast becoming the mother of all turn-arounds in 2007.

Meanwhile Hull KR went down to Bradford in a 5 tries to 2 belting to consolidate the Robins reputation as the worst performing team at home this season. - Read More, Here
