The race for twelfth spot in the NRL is still very much up for grabs as we head into round 6 of the National Rugby League.

Since 2000, 7 NRL teams avoided the finals by 4 spots on the competition ladder after finishing with an average of 20.75 points per season.

For Rugby League fans who may think their team is out of contention for this most prestigious title, the statistics suggest that despite a good start to the season, it’s not always the slow starters who get rewarded come the final round.

In 2007 the Gold Coast Titans finished it’s debut season in 12th position after recording 3 wins from their first five games much like the Penrith Panthers did during the previous season.

Only one team has gone onto win the premiership the following season. Penrith – who after earning the big 12 in 2002 – climbed 11 spots the following season to win the 2003 NRL Premiership.

Canterbury – Bankstown – who won their 8th premiership in 2004 – did the opposite the following year and dropped 10 spots to record another piece of history to be proud of.

Whether you’re team is struggling at the moment or they’re setting the world on fire and getting TV commentators more hyperactive then a Jack Russell Terrier, don’t give up. Twelfth spot will still be up for grabs for quite some time.

Here ends the football sermon.
