Michael Hagan has made his first bold move of the year by naming Mark Riddell as the Eels captain..... for this weekend's trial game against Cronulla.

While Nathan Cayless is expected to return to the role in 2007, Hagan’s choice for fill-in captain during the trials can be interpreted in several ways.

A sign that the Eels are preparing for life after Cayless when he finishes in the role? Is Riddell acting as a decoy for the real successor?

Or have I been watching too many conspiracy theory movies in the off-season?

Hagan’s decision, make of it what you will, is sensible, sound and practical.

Riddell will run onto Pioneer Oval in Parkes this weekend as the most experienced player in a team comprising of over a dozen stars from last year’s premier league side.

Meanwhile future first-grader Blake Green will steer the NRL Eels around the park for the very first time ever alongside five-eighth Feleti Mateo.
