Collegians took out premiership number 8 in the Illawarra Carlton League last Sunday after a late try to lock Linken Hutchinson set up a 20-18 win over reigning premiers Dapto in the Grand Final.

Down 18-16 as the clock drew closer to full-time, desperate times called for desperate measures leading to a well-timed bomb from halfback Greg Robson.

Robson’s foot of fear created an aerial tussle before Collies regained possession to help Hutchinson dive over to score the most important four-pointer of the season.

Robson had a spectacular afternoon in attack and was involved in earlier try-assist which lead to a try by fullback Lee Finnerty.

The win was sweet revenge for Collies who was thumped 38-18 by Dapto in the major semi-final two weeks ago yet saved their best performance for the most important day of the year.

“It was a game that had everything and I think the comp deserved that. It’s such a good comp and it was a fitting grand final,” Hutchinson told the Illawarra Mercury.

For some the loss is something they’ll have to learn to live with for the rest of their lives.

Dapto halfback Justin Holbrook only narrowly missed out on a back-to-back premiership on the day of his last game as captain-coach.

Holbrook is leaving Dapto due to a work promotion to Canberra and remains undecided if he will resume playing League again in the future.

Collegians coach Gavin Clinch attributed his side’s win to learning ‘a lot from the last time we got beat by them.”

In Group 7 Albion Park Oak-Flats won back to back titles with an easy 44-10 routing of Berry Shoalhaven Heads at Ron Costello Oval.

The Eagles never looked like they were in trouble after piling on four tries to lead 22-0 at half-time before scoring another 22 in the final forty.

All eight tries from the Eagles came from Sean Jenkins (2), Simon Pimanovs, Shane Sainsbury, Glen Roberts, Adam Bezzina, Trent Geary and Dean Gray.
