Fijian players will get the opportunity to press their claims for a spot in the World Cup when they do battle in a Nines tournament in February.
A total of 16 teams will be involved in the event that is scheduled for Saturday, February 9 at Cabramatta Sports Ground in Sydney’s west.
“Fiji might have already chosen their initial squad but there is an opportunity for players to impress and put up their hands for a World Cup berth”, said Rugby League International Federation Development Officer Tas Baitieri.
There are also recruitment officers at these events and these players can win themselves contracts with Australian clubs.”
Fiji will join the likes of Australia, England, New Zealand, France, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Ireland and Scotland in the ten nation World Cup later this year.
Each game of the Nines tournament will be played over two nine-minute periods and will feature nine players per side.
“Nine-a-side rugby league allows for a more even competition rather than the big scores that occur in 7s football,” said Baitieri.
Other nations that will be involved will include Japan, Portugal, Cook Islands and American Samoa.
The tournament will start at 11.45am with matches played over two nine-minute periods. Group matches will also be held on the adjoining field.
For fans who want to see all the action, Cabramatta Sports Ground is located at Sussex Street , Cabramatta. Entry into the tournament is free.
