Sweaty rugby league fans will enjoy
a free sauna this weekend as the first NRL trial game kicks off amongst a busy
calendar of sporting events across the country.

Tonight the Cronulla Sharks are
guests to the Canberra Raiders in temperatures which could reach as high as 31
degrees despite isolated morning showers in the ACT region.









Conditions are expected to be fine
come kick-off though fans in attendance can expect some gusty northwest to southwest
winds which may impact upon the kicking
success rate of both teams.

In the first official match the
Raiders play under new coach David Furner, the green machine will be hoping to
replicate some of the enterprising attack that won them the support of footy
fans in general at the end of the 2008 season.



You get the feeling we haven’t seen the
best of the Raiders yet and one wonders what gems they’ve been hiding in their
junior ranks. Could we see a David Warner type talent unveiled tonight?



Cronulla – coming off the back of a
scoreless loss to Melbourne in last year’s preliminary final at Aussie Stadium –
will look to bounce back.They'll attempt to do so with a young and inexperienced side, made up of
Toyota Cup under 20's talent including the likes of Ben Orcher, Jack Bosden,
Ben Ferguson and Nathan Stapleton.



This is
the first of three trial games for both clubs.
MY VERDICT:



My tip favours the Raiders who traditionally do well in the pre-season. Last year they
won two of their three trial games while the Sharks suffered two straight
losses including a 44-0 thumping at the
hands of South Sydney.
