Newcastle Knights coach Brian Smith witnessed history re-written for all the wrong reasons on Sunday after Brisbane scored an emphatic 71-6 win at Suncorp Stadium.

The Knights’ previous worst loss was a 64-14 drubbing against Cronulla on August 11, 2002 until this weekend.

Brisbane controlled the game totally untested, scoring 12 tries to one on the way to their fourth win of the season.

The homeside however could not walk away with too many bragging rights given the post-Origin injury toll.

Newcastle were without Kurt Gidley (shoulder), captain Danny Buderus (foot) and forward Steve Simpson (calf), so the result wasn’t totally unexpected.

Knights halfback Jarrod Mullen continued to impress NSW selectors after scoring the only try of the game for Newcastle in the 33rd minute.
