The Newtown Jets scored a six-point victory over foundation club rivals, North Sydney at Henson Park last Saturday.

Both clubs fielded plenty of triallists and Jersey Flegg squad members and the crowd was treated to an entertaining, high-speed trial match between two well-prepared teams.

The match was played over three twenty-five minute sessions and was a relatively low-scoring affair for the season’s opening trial match. The Jets led 6-0 at the end of the first session and 10-4 after fifty minutes of play. The Bears pulled back to 10-all early in the third and final session but Newtown claimed the honours for the evening with the last try of the game.

Jets coaching staff Paul Young and Greg Matterson were both quietly pleased with the fitness and discipline of their young players and especially with the commitment displayed in defence for extended periods.

Anthony Cherrington and Brett Lane stood out as being among Newtown’s best while two of last season’s VB Premier League Grand Finalists Danny Williams and Rory Kostjaysn showed up well in some tough forwards’ exchanges.

Roosters 2007 Jersey Flegg coach James Pickering (formerly with the Bulldogs and Workington Town) took a keen interest in the early form of a number of players who will probably form the basis of his squad. Sydney Roosters DRLFC senior Directors Nick Politis and Michael Conn were in attendance on the day along with the Roosters NRL Head Coach Chris Anderson.

The Newtown Jets meet up with the Balmain Tigers in another Premier League trial match next Saturday evening (February 17th) at Aussie Stadium with this match due to start at 5.30pm. - Read More, Here
