The Brisbane Broncos almost left their fans hopping mad after only narrowly beating South Sydney 8-4 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Running out onto home turf as defending premiers, the Broncos struggled to take control of game, taking 46 minutes to grab the first points off the back of a Darren Lockyer penalty goal.

But it was not until Darius Boyd crossed over in the 68th minute that the homeside looked like short odds to bag their third win of 2007.

The rejuvenated Rabbitohs – minus David Peachey (corked thigh) – continued to keep Broncos fans right on the edge of their seats.

Down 8-0 with 5 minutes remaining, a glimmer of hope prevailed for Souths coach Jason Taylor when Shannon Hegarty juggled the ball while crossing the line in the 79th minute.

A failed conversion attempt from the touchline by Nathan Merritt meant the visitors had to score a converted try inside the final minute to cause an upset.

This seemed like the stuff of fiction until Shannon Hegarty kicked down field and John Sutton almost got his hand to the ball as Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt attempted to send it dead.

Unfortunately for Sutton not only did Video Referee Tim Mander rule ‘No Try’, the utility star also injured his hand and required assistance leaving the field.

The Rabbitohs have not lost more then two games in a row this season, so they are expected to bounce back against Canberra in round 9.

Joe Williams kicked his sixth 40/20 of the season and took out GRL’s 80 minute legend award.
