The Brisbane Broncos gave their fans a slight scare before overcoming a much improved Central Comets squad 30-12 in their first trial game of 2008.

Made up of mostly under-20 eligible players, the 2006 premiers almost made themselves the laughing stock of the off-season when they fell behind the Comets 12-0 are of tries to Shannon Wood and Brent Williams after the opening 14 minutes of play.

Three tries inside the second quarter levelled the scores 12-all at half-time before the Broncos went on with the job for the rest of the contest under the leadership of captain Mick Roberts.

Central Queenslander Brendon Gibb scored first for the Broncos in the 26th minute followed on by Will Tupou and Alex Glenn just before half-time.

The beginning of the end for the Comets commenced in the 55th minute care of Ben Hunt who ran into a hole via a nice ball from Palmer Wapau.

A Tim Yee four-pointer put the result beyond doubt at 24-12 with 10 minutes remaining before Guy Ford got through near the posts right on full-time.

Brisbane play the North Queensland Cowboys next Saturday at Browne Park.

Last season the Central Comets went down 56-12 against the Broncos in a demolition derby which summed up their overall season in the Queensland Cup.
