Wayne Bennett is on the verge of scoring his first win over former club Brisbane in this weekend’s final round of NRL trials.
The man who took the Broncos to six-premierships in 20-years has his new team, St George-Illawarra, leading the NRL’s off-season competition ladder on for-and-against points following recent wins over the Sydney Roosters (54-6) and the Bulldogs (24-12).

But there are three other undefeated NRL teams also sitting on 4 competition points in the off season with the Broncos lurking in second spot followed by the Warriors and the Eels.St George are heavy favourites to secure the 2009 Trials Premiership. But if they lose to the Rabbitohs on Saturday, that could open the door for Broncos coach Ivan Henjak to sneak in a dark horse triumph over his former boss.

For all we know the Broncos and Dragons could both lose, giving new Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson a chance to shut up some journalists who don’t rate his squad a chance of even making the top eight this season. Then again the Eels might fall at the final hurdle as they've been known to do very well in recent years, possibly handing victory to Anderson's former club, the New Zealand Warriors.

There are 7 trial games being played on Saturday night with five teams still hunting for a single victory before the NRL season officially kicks off on the weekend of March 13-16.
The Cowboys, the Knights, the Bulldogs, Cronulla and Penrith will be under pressure from their fans to avoid winning the 2009 Warm-Up Games Wooden Spoon Championship.
Penrith on for-and-against and trial form are favourites to hand Mathew Elliot his second spoon in his third year at the club. They play North Queensland who just came up short against New Zealand last Sunday.
